The Australian and New Zealand Sports Law Association (ANZSLA) was formed in 1990 and held its first annual conference at the University of Melbourne on this day in 1991. The theme of that conference was ‘The Law of Professional Team Sports’.
Thirty years on and ANZSLA continues to be the premier not-for-profit sports law organisation in the Australasian region, with a diverse membership of lawyers, sports administrators, academics, government representatives and students. In celebration of this milestone anniversary and as part of its commitment to legal education, ANZSLA today announced the establishment of a Sports Law Scholarship Programme, designed to support an individual who wishes to engage in legal research in the area of sports law. The inaugural sports law scholarship grant available is $10,000.
ANZSLA’s President, Martin Ross, said “The announcement of this scholarship underpins ANZSLA’s commitment to provide education and advocacy about legal issues in sport in Australia and New Zealand.”
The scholarship is available to ANZSLA members who are either planning to study or who are currently enrolled in a graduate academic program in a university or similar tertiary education provider, or in a course of studies that has a demonstrable sports law component.
Applications open today for the inaugural 2020-2021 scholarship programme and close on 31 August 2020. The award winners will be announced on the ANZSLA website on 12 October 2020.
The Scholarship rules, eligibility criteria and application form are available from the ANZSLA website www.anzsla.com.
