Webinar: Tortious and Statutory Liability of Event Organisers (August 2023)
A webinar with expert guest speakers Simon Grant (Barrister, 19Inns) and Dr Eric Windholz (Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law, Monash University). This session was introduced by Dr Annette Greenhow (ANZSLA Director).
The Queensland case of USM Events Pty Ltd v James [2023] QCA 71 highlights the importance of event organisers giving careful thought about how best to make their events safe, and the consequences of failing to do so. In this seminar, Queensland barrister Simon Grant discusses the case, the principles that determine liability at common law, and the steps event organisers need to take to discharge their duty of care. Monash Law academic Eric Windholz will then discuss the potential liability of event organisers under work health and safety law, drawing out similarities and differences with the common law.
