The Organisation
Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness Limited (SUSF) is a dynamic organisation providing sporting, recreation and fitness services to the University and general community. This involves the management of over 40 sporting clubs, several fitness, health and other sport-related facilities, and the coordination of University and community-based sport and recreation programs.
Role Description
The position will report to the SUSF Legal Counsel, and work closely with the CEO of Sydney University Sport & Fitness (SUSF) and will help manage, supervise and coordinate the Legal Division and assist in the delivery of best practice legal service and advice to SUSF.
The role will work under the direct supervision of the SUSF Legal Counsel so an unrestricted Practising Certificate is not needed.
This position description sets out the current responsibilities of this role and will be updated from time to time as SUSF’s needs change. The position description outlines the key responsibilities and requirements of the role, and in addition to the specific responsibilities, all SUSF employees are required to carry out duties commensurate with the position held by them, their skills and their experiences, as well as perform other duties as directed by SUSF.
Responsibilities
Legal
- Point of contact for stakeholder enquiries regarding SUSF legal matters, policies and procedures.
- Draft all Sponsor contracts, ensuring consistency across the organisation
- Draft all supplier contracts, ensuring consistency across the organisation
- Manage and coordinate any matters requiring mediation or litigation, if necessary working with external legal service providers to reach a resolution satisfactory to both parties.
- Monitor and review the performance of disciplinary procedures to ensure SUSF continues to deliver best practise disciplinary processes to its stakeholders and SUSF Staff.
- Maintain a database to ensure the accurate recording of disciplinary decisions.
- Assist in the drafting and negotiation of contracts, policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Ensure that the provision of policies, procedures, guidelines and forms to SUSF Staff is consistent across the organisation, including but not limited to the Hub, and Human Resources soft filing system.
- Actively participate in projects across the organisation that that contribute to the development of practise standards, operational guidelines, and review mechanisms to facilitate effective and efficient services to SUSF Staff and stakeholders.
- Work with the Head of People and Culture and the CEO to review and develop strategies that enhance the administration of SUSF policies and procedures.
- Ensure the integrity of confidential information is always maintained.
- Risk assessment and risk management across SUSF.
- Ensuring best practise processes regarding child protection and privacy.
- Keep up to date with law reform and adjust policies, procedures and guidelines accordingly.
- Assist in the Secretarial role of the USSF (The Foundation used to fundraise via DGR), when needed
- Assist in the Company Secretarial role of SUSF, when needed
- Assist in preparation of papers for the Board
- Keep Club Constitutions up to date and current
- Assist in AGM preparation
- Maintain a database of Business Names registered with ASIC
- Maintain a database of trademarks registered with IP Australia
- Other duties as directed by the Legal Counsel.

Required Capabilities & Qualifications
Essential:
- Legal experience (2+ years) (Unrestricted Practising Certificate is NOT required)
- Relevant tertiary qualifications – Degree in law
- Proven management experience
- Some Level of Human Resources/employment law experience
- Strong Communication & Interpersonal Skills
- Organisational & Time management skills
Desirable:
- Able to effectively operate computer hardware and software.
- Commercial acumen – builds and maintains a wide knowledge and understanding of the business environment and applies commercial expertise including building concepts, processes and strategies to achieve business objectives.
- Interest in sport and SUSF.
